Creative expression is how we remember who we are
An unexpressed body forgets what it's like to feel alive
Lovely ones,
When expression has no safe place to land outside the body, it stays inside, morphing into contraction.
The feeling that wanted to move, the sound that wanted to rise, the somatic impulse that was quietly but persistently discouraged until it became a symptom - it all shapes a body working hard to contain an enormous charge of unexpressed experience.
Some of us become rigid in this effort - braced, controlled, and vigilant. Others collapse under the weight of what could never be moved and channeled through and outside the body.
Both are forms of disconnection from our vitality. From the aliveness experienced in a body that is allowed to respond to what it feels.
We see this vert clearly in the voice. So many of us learned to swallow our own sound, making ourselves quieter, smaller, and less disruptive. The voice that wanted to speak, to sing, to scream, to cry, to laugh loudly, to be heard; but learned to stay inside, stopped trusting itself. It forgot the importance of the stories it carries, and lost touch with its own power: to transform us, and to move those who hear us.
More so than being about release, creative expression, is about contact.
It is a channel through which we touch something deeper than the worn-out narratives we’ve become identified with, and something larger than our daily selves: the mysterious, the numinous, the part of life that cannot be fully named but can be felt when we allow ourselves to move, make, and sound from a place of real contact with the worlds inside and out.
When that channel closes, we lose more than self-expression, we lose contact with what nourishes us at the deepest level, with what makes us feel alive, not just functional.
What has your body never had space to express? What would it feel like to allow it?
I’m offering a space for expression that arises from deep listening to the body. Join me for
